Vermiterra is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral belonging to the clay group with lamellar structure, resembling mica. Its main characteristic is trapped water between its layers which vaporizes at 900°C, causing the mineral to expand up to 30 times its original volume. The exfoliation converts fine flakes into lightweight accordion-shaped granules containing numerous layers of air.
